
A LED video wall is specified by many numbers, but one decides how good it looks: pixel pitch. Get it right and the image is sharp at the distance people actually stand; get it wrong and you either see the individual dots or you have paid handsomely for detail no one is close enough to notice. It is worth understanding before the budget conversation starts.
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centres of neighbouring LEDs. A smaller pitch, say P1.5, packs more pixels into the same area, giving higher resolution and a sharper image close up, at a higher cost per square metre. A larger pitch such as P10 spaces the LEDs further apart, which is cheaper and perfectly acceptable when viewers stand well back. Pitch, resolution and price are three views of the same decision.
A practical starting point is that the closest comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly the pixel pitch in millimetres: a P2.5 wall reads cleanly from about two and a half metres, a P4 from around four. Nearer than that and the pixels become visible; much farther and finer pitch is wasted money. The right question is not what is the finest wall available, but what is the closest anyone will realistically stand.
Environment decides brightness, measured in nits. An indoor wall in a controlled space typically needs several hundred to around fifteen hundred nits; a wall competing with direct sun outdoors needs several thousand. Outdoor walls also need weather sealing to a suitable IP rating, a wider and coarser pitch for the longer viewing distances, and a high refresh rate if cameras will ever film them, so the image does not flicker on screen. Ambient light, not just the technology, sets the floor for how bright the wall has to be to stay readable.
Each setting points to a different pitch. A lobby or retail wall that people approach closely justifies a fine pitch for a premium look. A control room watched for hours at close range needs fine pitch and reliable round-the-clock operation. An auditorium or arena, viewed from many metres away, is well served by a medium pitch with high brightness. An outdoor sign trades fineness for ruggedness and sheer luminance.
